Empowerment Through Learning in a Global World

This international conference at Stanford University will explore the enormous challenges in education faced by both the United States and Finland today. Preparing students to succeed in the 21st century demands strong cooperation among researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and technology leaders around the world.

Empowerment Through Learning in a Global World will focus on the synergy between education, technology, and future learning utilizing Finnish and American perspectives. How can new technology empower different learners in a global world? Can we establish common objectives for future cooperation and knowledge sharing? What can Finland and the United States learn from each other? Leading educational, social, and state policymakers, well-known international researchers, and representatives of private companies from both Finland and the United States will address these questions and more through the lens of policy, curriculum and instruction, teacher education, and technology.

Among the speakers are Claude Steele, Dean of the Stanford School of Education; Andreas Schleicher, Special Advisor on Education Policy to the Secretary General of the OECD; Pasi Sahlberg, Director of CIMO; Linda Darling-Hammond, Charles E. Ducommon Professor of Education at Stanford; Kathryn Baron of the Silicon Valley Education Foundation's Thoughts on Public Education; and Keith Devlin, Executive Director of the H-STAR Institute at Stanford. Education experts from the office of California Governor Jerry Brown will also attend.
